How to Choose the Best Newborn Photographer in Adelaide (Without the Overwhelm)

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re either expecting a little one (congratulations!) or you’ve just welcomed them into the world (congratulations x2!). Either way, you’re probably realising just how quickly time is already moving. And if your heart’s been pulling you toward capturing those first soft, sleepy days — you’re absolutely not alone.

But then comes the decision… How do you actually choose the best newborn photographer in Adelaide?

It can feel like a lot.

There are so many beautiful photographers out there, each with their own style and approach. So today I want to walk you through this in a simple, honest way — with the same care I’d give if we were sitting across from each other having coffee.

My hope is that by the end, you’ll feel clear, confident, and connected to the right fit for you (and maybe, just maybe, that’s me ✨).

Start with Style: What Speaks to Your Heart?

Newborn photography comes in all kinds of flavours. Some photographers use posed studio setups with cute props and baskets. Others (like me) keep things soft, minimal, and emotionally-led — using gentle posing, natural tones, and the kind of light that wraps around your baby like a hug.

There’s no right or wrong — only what feels most you.

If your heart is drawn to simplicity, connection, and timeless storytelling — you might love the way I photograph babies here in my Adelaide studio.

Every session is calm, baby-led, and focused on capturing those real, fleeting moments you’ll want to return to for years.

Look for Someone Who Knows How to Handle a Newborn

It’s one thing to be a talented photographer. It’s another thing entirely to understand babies.

Posing a newborn safely, gently, and with care isn’t something you can learn from YouTube. It comes from real-hands-on experience — knowing what to do when baby startles, when they need a break, when they just want to be held.

Make sure your photographer has a background in working with babies and understands how to read their cues. You want someone who won’t force a pose or rush the process. Someone who knows that the best images come when your baby is calm and content.

I’ve photographed well over 2,000 newborns in the past 20 years (and I think I’m being conservative with that number) — and I’m also a mum of three. So when you walk into my studio, know that you and your baby are in steady, practiced hands.

Choose Someone Who Sees You, Too

The best newborn sessions aren’t just about the baby. They’re about you — as a new mother, as a family, as a human navigating one of life’s biggest transitions.

Your photographer should make you feel safe, not judged. At ease, not on display. Look for someone who holds space for your emotions — whether you show up teary, tired, glowing, or all three at once.

My studio is designed so you can just… be. Soft light. Calm music. A warm cup of tea if you need it. I don’t need you to be “ready” — just present.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask About Experience (Credentials Matter When It Comes to Newborns)

Your baby’s first photos aren’t the time for someone to be “figuring it out.”

Ask questions like: How many newborns have you photographed? Do you work in a professional studio? What do your past clients say about working with you?

For context — I’ve spent two decades doing this, I’m a Master Photographer with the AIPP, and my studio has over 116 five-star Google reviews from Adelaide families. I’ve also been a Telstra Business Awards finalist and am a qualified interior designer — which helps enormously when it comes to turning your images into art for your home.

You don’t have to choose someone with my exact background. But I do recommend finding someone who has a proven track record, who has weathered all the variables that come with photographing newborns (and their older siblings!) and who knows how to create a beautiful, safe space for you and your baby.

Consider the Full Experience — Not Just the Shoot

When you’re tired, emotional, and still figuring things out (hello, newborn life), the last thing you want is more on your plate.

That’s why I run a full-service studio — so you can simply show up and exhale. From planning and styling, to gently guiding you through the shoot, to designing custom artwork for your home — I take care of it all.

I offer both digital files for sharing and safekeeping, as well as the option to create stunning, polished keepsakes:
– Heirloom albums
– Framed fine art prints
– Wall galleries designed to suit your space
– Keepsake boxes you can pass down someday

As a qualified Interior Designer, I can even help you choose what to print and where to display it — so your memories don’t just live on your phone. They become part of your everyday life.

Look Beyond Instagram — Ask to See Full Galleries

Instagram is lovely, but it only tells part of the story.

Social media is a beautiful highlight reel — but it’s only a small slice of a full session. Ask your potential photographer to see full galleries so you can understand what a complete set of images looks like: consistency, variety, and emotional depth.

You’re welcome to reach out to me anytime to view a full newborn session from start to finish. I believe in transparency, and I want you to feel 100% confident in your decision — whether you choose me or not.

Understand What’s Included (and Why Pricing Varies)

Let’s talk about the money stuff — gently and honestly.

You’ll notice that pricing for newborn photography in Adelaide can vary a lot. Some photographers charge just a few hundred dollars, while others (like me) are a higher investment. And the difference usually comes down to experience, studio environment, and end product.

When you invest in a newborn session with me, you’re not just paying for photos — you’re receiving a calm, baby-led experience in a fully equipped commercial studio (I don’t work from home, this is my full-time gig and I work from a stand-alone commercial studio space).

All my clients have full access to a curated client wardrobe and styling guidance as well as beautifully directed guidance during your session to bring out your best without you even knowing that’s what I’m doing.

You’ll receive safe, expert handling of your newborn (this part alone is priceless) as well as the hard-earned ability to get your toddler to do (mostly) what I need them to do!

All purchased images are hand-edited by me so I can have complete control over my end product.

99% of the time I am able to deliver your fully edited images to you the same day as your shoot.

I focus on storytelling, not stiff posing — real connection, real emotion – because that’s what you’ll want to remember when they are toddlers, preschoolers, high-schoolers and beyond!

I’ve poured years of experience and heart into creating an offering that honours this sacred chapter of your life — and I know it’s not for everyone. But if you’re looking for more than just pictures… if you want an experience that feels held, intentional, and truly meaningful… this may be exactly what your heart has been searching for.

So, Who Is the Best Newborn Photographer in Adelaide?

The honest answer? It depends on what you value.

If you’re looking for someone affordable and quick, there are photographers out there for that. But if you want a deeply personalised, safe, full-service experience — led by someone with heart, skill, and two decades of experience — I’d love to gently invite you into my studio.

My goal is to make this feel effortless, emotional, and unforgettable — because these moments are once-in-a-lifetime.
