DIGITAL FILES

Digital files are fickle things. They can just ‘decide’ to no longer work – corrupt themselves and generally just be pains in the bum.

The best way to safe guard against the digital file gremlins is to ensure you have multiple copies of the same files over separate devices.

Ideally, full resolution copies would exist on your home computer, on an external hard drive and also in ‘the cloud’ – ie internet based storage. This ensures that if your house were to burn down, you don’t need to run in to safe the harddrive!

The only truly failsafe way to archive your images is to print them – so please make sure your digital files don’t rot away on a harddrive for ever. Print them out, pop them in standard photo albums and let the kids look through them when they feel the need! The images are created to be loved and to unlock nostalgia when the time is right.

Back up. Print. And back up again.

PRINTS

If you have been provided with images directly from the studio, these are nearly always printed to ‘standard’ sizes – but there is lots of standard sizes so we’ll break it down for you.

We offer 8×10″ prints which are matted (the white cardboard boarder around the outside) to 11×14″. When searching for a frame for this size, look for frames with an opening to suit 11×14″.

We also offer 5×7″ prints matted to 8×10″. When searching for a frame for this size, look for frames with an opening of 8×10″.

Most homewares stores offer standard size frames, however over the years we have seen a trend towards “A4, A3” etc, which does make life quite confusing. Just make sure you purchase frame sizes that are quoted in inches to match your matt size.

Tip: Don’t bother with Ikea. Their sizes are all over the place and we are pretty sure they get the intern to invent them.

WALL ART

Our wall art is all archive quality papers and will stand the test of time if treated right.

Keep away from direct sunlight, and don’t expose to moisture (don’t hang them in the bathroom for example)

All wall art comes ready to hang, but it’s important to use the correct hanging hardware depending on the type of wall you are hanging the on.

You will need to use masonry hanging hardware (wall plugs and screws) if hanging on solid brick, and dry wall/plaster board hardware if hanging into standard internal walls.

Whilst some of our wall art is light enough to be hung with 3M hooks, we do not recommend this as they can often fatigue over time and it’s really sad when artwork hits the floor suddenly.

ALBUMS

Our albums are of the highest professional quality and will stand the test of time if treated right.

Keep away from direct sunlight and don’t expose to moisture (don’t store them in a damp room or cupboard for example)

Albums are best stored flat, however if they are stored in a bookshelf, ensure they are adequately supported on either side – the weight of the pages can warp the spine if unsupported.

The pages of your albums are thick and designed to be enjoyed by CLEAN little hands. If sticky fingers do enjoy the book, GENTLY wipe clean with a slightly damp soft cloth. Do not scrub.

Leather covered albums can be wiped clean with water, however linen covers need to be treated with a bit more care as they do not clean as easily as the leather or vinyl options.

BOXES

Our large box holds 8×10″ prints which are matted to 11×14″. (see prints)

You can remove images from the box for framing, however this might mean the images no longer sit flush with the acrylic window – just pop a magazine between the remaining prints to ‘prop’ the images up straight and fill the gap left by the removed images.

This will ensure the remaining images still sit straight and the display remains beautiful.

Keep out of direct sunlight and humid/damp conditions.

Handle the images with clean hands as the matt board marks easily. Use an eraser gently on the matt board to remove small marks, do not scrub.

ICE BLOCKS

Our ice blocks are quite robust but are quite heavy, so please ensure they are displayed on a steady and firm surface.

Wipe clean with a damp cloth and polish with windex to the front side only – do not wet the back of the ice block where the print is mounted to the block.

PRINTING

Avoid Big W, Kmart. Officeworks is slightly better, however still not great.

We recommend Black and White Photographics here in Adelaide, and they have an online ordering option.
